Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) was born on March 2nd, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Theodor Geisel began his career as an illustrator for magazines such as Vanity Fair and Life. He also drew political cartoons for the New York newspaper PM. and produced art for ad campaigns.
Geisel began his career writing and illustrating children's books in 1937 before turning to political cartoons and animation for the film department of the US Army during World War II.
After the war Geisel returned to writing children's books under the pen name "Dr. Seuss". He published over 60 books over the course of his career, including such beloved classics as The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Green Eggs and Ham, The Lorax, and Horton Hears a Who!
